I've tried to follow what are the updates applied to the metrics so that it
leads to the assertion failure. It seems that in the failed case there are no
problems at all - I can see 3 updates as expected: 9670, 8787, 8885, which give
the moving average with alpha=0.0046 = 9662, and avg=9114, so at least there is
no problem there.
Another question is whether values like 9670, 8787, 8885 are correct, and what
is the sources of such randomness.
