in-tree patch. also contains debug (requested by [~edimitrova], and timeouts
around script execution of the test splits (which has been witnessed to hang
indefinitely). (it remains unclear if this is enough, whether timeout is also
beneficial around the node call for when the node is unresponsive and the inner
timeout wouldn't trigger. an outer timeout would need a much higher value,
e.g. 1 day.)
