Bernardo Botella Corbi commented on CASSPYTHON-29:
--------------------------------------------------
Such an interesting conversation!
My two cents is that I agree with the sentiment that these security concerns,
if any, should be hardened at server side. There is usually little value on
enforcing these security concerns at client level if the server just let them
through. It is pretty trivial to patch a client to ignore those protections if
that is the case.
These two should be related:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-21756
Having said that, I also agree that I don't think this feature should be
blocked on the driver side while the server side hardens them. It looks like a
preexisting thread that needs to be corrected where the thread lives.

> Modify the driver to allow sending arbitrary STARTUP message options.
> Proposed design:
> - Add `extra_startup_options` param to Cluster constructor.
> - Thread it through Cluster -> connection setup (cluster.py) ->
> StartupMessage.
> - Define clear precedence/conflict behavior when duplicate/conflicting
> options are passed into the StartupMessage constructor.
> *Note:*
> This Jira was originally created for sending the client's application name
> and version as `APPLICATION_NAME` /
> `APPLICATION_VERSION` options in the STARTUP message, which is tied to the
> now-defunct DataStax Insights offering.
> Since the Java driver (5.0.0) and eventually C/C++ driver (3.0.0) are
> removing withApplicationName()/withApplicationVersion() entirely, this ticket
> has been updated.
