Actually, the version I was going with at the time was 0.99.  My reasoning was 
that I felt that until the features that had been implemented got some real 
usage, it was naive to think that they were right.  I described it at the time 
as a way of communicating that it was meant to represent 1.0, but that the door 
was cracked open, just in case.

You (Jonathan) argued that it should be 1.0, because 0.99 would send the 
message that it wasn't ready, and would result in less adoption.
