https://github.com/jbellis/cassandra/branches/4018-9. (Changes were rebased
except for the last commit, which is new.)
Note that this is against current trunk now including CASSANDRA-4278, but it
does not work; getting "COMMENT is not a valid keyword argument" from
compile(). Bug in 4278?
