Zero is not incorrect on race - zero is in fact completely correct, since the 
only scenario in which you can get infinite is when one of the two values has 
changed and the other hasn't, i.e. you peeked inbetween the only update for the 
interval. So if you'd peeked a moment before you'd have seen zero. So you just 
pretend you peeked a moment before.
