@mlsorensen apart from migration where an old an a new instance might need access to a shared volume, can we think of any other situation in which volumes may be shared amongst instances (maybe shared virtual memory)? I like your last proposal, but what if there is a problem with guaranteeing exclusivity? (if possible). We might also need a flag that says to claim or be lenient.
