I've been doing some research and I think this limitation comes from the CHAP authentication protocol itself for the PPP authentication, the chap-secrets file is required to have the passwords on plain text as those are never sent over the network (https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/816-4555/pppsvrconfig.reference-21/index.html). An alternative would be using the PAP protocol instead of CHAP for the PPP authentication, which would allow encrypting passwords: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E36784_01/html/E36829/pppsvrconfig.intro-8.html. However, I'm not sure if this would be the best option, some articles suggest that CHAP is more secure as the password is never sent over the network while on PAP it is. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
