Layering feature evolved slightly to support CRC, checksum, parity feature. Test is based on ipv4 with two layer transforms, due to that in an ip packet, the checksum appears in the middle of the data of which it is a checksum. So the first layer underlies the fields that are before the checksum, the second layer underlies the fields after the checksum.
