peferron edited a comment on issue #7039: Kafka Ingestion Spec to allow kafka topic with gzip compression URL: https://github.com/apache/incubator-druid/issues/7039#issuecomment-462438683 If you download the [Kafka binary package](https://kafka.apache.org/downloads) on the same machine that runs your Druid middle manager process, are you able to read from this compressed topic using `kafka-console-consumer`? Also, after removing the `indexSpec` from your ingestion spec, are you able to get a successful HTTP response code when submitting this ingestion spec? If yes, then you can try to open the [overlord console](http://druid.io/docs/latest/design/overlord.html) and look for the logs of the tasks corresponding to the compressed topic. If there are no tasks then look at the overlord logs directly to try to find out why.
