   Even if hypothetically OSS and S3 are 100% compatible right now, that feels 
like a fragile thing to rely on for the future (and do we know for sure there 
aren't bugs/small implementation differences that will cause us problems if we 
tried to share code or abstractions?)

   Since they're operated and maintained by different organizations, my view is 
that we should just treat them as if they were non-compatible and totally 
different things, I don't actually mind code duplication all that much for 
something like this.
