Rebased onto current `main` (now including #966 and #968) and force-pushed. Locally `mvn -pl io-api -am clean verify` gives 63 tests, 0 failures, 0 errors, 0 skipped. This one sits on top of #971 — reviewing and merging #971 first leaves a single commit here.
