+
+As always at the start of another new month, let's have a look at what
happened at Hop over the last month. Here's the recap for July and August 2021!
+
+[[Release099]]
+== Hop 0.99 Release
+
+On August 7th, the Hop community released Apache Hop (Incubating) 0.99. As
discussed at length in the
https://hop.apache.org/blog/2021/08/hop-0.99/[release announcement], 0.99 is
our last stop before Hop 1.0.
+
+Since we want 1.0 to be as robust as possible, the focus has been on hardening
Hop, so we worked hard on finding and fixing as many bugs as possible.
Nevertheless, there's quite a bit of new functionality in 0.99 as well:
+
+* Hop Web is now a mature alternative to Hop Gui on your Windows, Mac OS or
Linux desktop.
+* Avro and Parquet have new transforms for input and output, Avro support
comes with its own `Avro Record` data type
+* VFS support has been extended to projects etc, so your Apache Hop projects
can now live in a cloud storage folder on AWS, GCP or Azure.
+* the PDI/Kettle importer has been improved. It now supports reading variables
directly to an environment file, VFS support was added here as well, existing
files and folders can now be skipped, and Pentaho Data Integration or Kettle
projects can now be imported from the command line with the new `hop-import`
tool.
+* Metadata Injection received some major work. A lot of additional transforms
now support metadata injection, the Metadata Injection transform dialog now
shows the icons for the transforms in your template pipeline along with lots of
smaller improvements
+* the Hop documentation is now feature complete, while we continue to add
additional docs, improve existing pages and add more samples to the samples
project.
+* Hop is now fully translated in Italian. We fixed some translation and
internationalization issues in the process.
+
+== Various
+
+In the three weeks since the Hop 0.99 release, the Hop team continued to work
on a variety of items:
+
+=== Dropbox VFS support
+
+In addition to cloud storage for AWS, Azure and GCP, Hop VFS now also
https://hop.apache.org/manual/latest/vfs/dropbox-vfs.html[supports Dropbox].
+
+=== Bug Fixing Continued code cleanup
+
+A number of (minor) bugs have been identified and fixed since the 0.99 release.
+
+In preparation for 1.0, the Hop team continues to clean up old and deprecated
code. Automated code formatting has been added, we continue to fix
https://sonarcloud.io/dashboard?id=apache_incubator-hop[SonarCloud] and other
issues to get the Hop source code in the best shape possible for the Hop 1.0
release.

+
+=== Hop Mailing lists
+
+Don't forget to subscribe to our mailto:[email protected][dev] and
mailto:[email protected][users] mailing lists!
+These mailing lists allow us to discuss and make decisions in a process that
is as transparent and inclusive as possible, and as such are an important tool
in our communication as an Apache project.
+
+The dev and user lists currently _only_ have 31 and 29 subscribers
respectively. We can do better, Hop Community!
+
+Subscribing is as easy as sending an empty email by clicking the links below:
+
+* mailto:[email protected][users]: general how-to and
functionality questions. Ask us anything!
+* mailto:[email protected][dev]: developer discussions. There's a
lot of informal discussion going on in our https://chat.project-hop.org[chat
channels], but decisions that matter are taken on the dev list!
+
+=== Hop Community

+The Hop community continues to grow:

contributors.
+
+Without community contribution, Hop is just a coding club! Please feel free to
join, participate in the discussion, test, file bug tickets on the software or
documentation, ... Contributing is a lot more than writing code.
