librdkafka 2.12.1 asks for all topics with Metadata v9+ and leaves its four-byte topic-count placeholder in the body (`00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00`), so three zero bytes follow the fields. Kafka brokers ignore trailing bytes. `decode_guarded` rejects them and the gateway closes the connection, so librdkafka 2.x clients can't list topics. Proposal: accept trailing bytes for Metadata, as brokers do, with a regression test on the captured bytes.
