After re-running the project build, the supplemental information we provided
will be merged with the metadata from the dependency POMs, providing enough
information to complete the dependencies listing.
+How a Supplement Is Merged
+--------------------------
+
+A value that the supplement sets replaces the dependency POM's value, and a
value it leaves out keeps the POM's. Lists are replaced as a whole: when a
supplement declares `licenses`, `developers`, `contributors` or `mailingLists`,
the dependency gets exactly the entries in the supplement, and none of the
entries in its own POM. To add a license to the one a POM declares, list both
in the supplement.
+
+This makes a supplement the place to correct the license of one artifact, for
example one whose POM points only at a license page on its own website:
+
+```xml
+ <supplement>
+ <project>
+ <groupId>org.foo</groupId>
+ <artifactId>own-license-page</artifactId>
+
+ <licenses>
+ <license>
+ <name>MIT License</name>
+ <url>https://opensource.org/licenses/MIT</url>
+ </license>
+ </licenses>
+ </project>
+ </supplement>
+```
+
+Supplements play the same role as the `licenses.xml` file of the [License
Maven Plugin](https://www.mojohaus.org/license-maven-plugin/): both describe
one artifact by `groupId` and `artifactId`, so a supplement applies to every
version of that artifact.
