   Assigning a too-large number to a signed type is not undefined behavior, it 
is implementation defined.  gcc (and I believe nearly all compilers) defines 
this behavior in the expected way: 
https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Integers-implementation.html
   
   So, that is exactly what the signed time type is for :).  For example, see 
the `OS_TIME_TICK_LT` macro.
