Summary: Cleanup startup errors in face of bad/missing
configurations

Should gracefully handle missing configuration options. In some cases we can
make assumptions as long as those assumptions are well defined. The last thing
that should occur is a seg fault, which currently happens for many constructed
objects that rely on missing paths.
