yes it is still active and you can use it as your GSOC project
you can find more details in comments to this issue and on our main site at
http://openmeetings.apache.org/ and ask questions in our dev@ mailing list
due to this issue and OPENMEETINGS-553 are both relates to calendar it can be
combined.
