No, other programs show microphones fine.
One peculiarity about this issue is that the list of capture devices differs
from the list of playback devices.
For example, /dev/dsp6 is a USB microphone embedded into a webcam, and it
doesn't have corresponding speakers.
Do you, by any chance, just use the playback device list as a list of capture
devices?
