   I wouldn’t recommend adding this mode as a solution to schema mismatches. 
New segments generated through batch or streaming ingestion using the updated 
schema would still have the new column type, so the table could encounter the 
same query merge failures.
   
   Changing an existing column’s data type is backward incompatible. If users 
need to make that change, they need to refresh all segments in the table so the 
stored types consistently match the new schema. Queries may still fail during 
the transition while old and new types coexist; an index-only refresh would 
leave that underlying incompatibility unresolved.
