It's a different operation when a single message is read or consumed compared to reading or consuming many. When reading or consuming a single message, the ReactiveStream (Mono in the case of Reactor) completes after a single message. If you wrap consumeMessages result in a Mono, it will cancel the Flux after receiving the first message and so the Flux completes.
