   This change fixed the original problem, but then caused a npe in 
OneStageAuthenticationState.java:
   new String(authData.getBytes(), UTF_8)
   
   I propose that we change line 318 to:
   AuthData clientData = AuthData.of(connect.hasAuthData() ? 
connect.getAuthData() : "".getBytes());
