OK, I checked the new user registration page for Google Mail, Yahoo Accounts,
and Facebook. Google does it the way you like (no maxlength HTML restriction
used, just client-side javascript complaining after-the-fact), but Yahoo and
Facebook both place in a maxlength restriction.
