Glen Mazza commented on ROL-907:
--------------------------------
OK, I was assuming "task" meant a process external to Roller used for
populating the Blacklist[1] -- the Blacklist class[2] dates to 2003 and even
the comments in that file say the Movable Type blacklist it relies on has been
discontinued[3]. I'm not sure if we need a externally managed blacklist today
anyway--for one thing, I wouldn't be surprised if over half of the URLs listed
in that (at least) 8 year old blacklist return 404s today (not that I'm about
to try to access those websites to find out), also, perhaps Roller's
functionality requiring answering a math question prior to posting has been
sufficient in getting rid of most automated spam comments.

Externally, there is Akismet[4] and other options[5] available, with some
requiring licenses and payment. But AFAICT, there is no longer a centrally
maintained blacklist anymore.

My recommendation would be to empty out our present blacklist as it's out of
date and highly vulgar, and add a note in the Install guide that Admins are
welcome to add to it as they please.

> Currently, the blacklist task is useless because MT Blacklist is no longer
> updated.
> If we make the URL configurable, others could host the blacklist.
