Glen Mazza commented on ROL-1275:
---------------------------------

The term today for an "auto-trackback" appears to be "pingback", with its own
specification:
http://www.hixie.ch/specs/pingback/pingback

Description of trackback vs. pingback:
http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/what-why-and-how-tos-of-trackbacks-and-pingbacks-in-wordpress/
http://codex.wordpress.org/Introduction_to_Blogging#Trackbacks

However, according to the wpbeginner blog entry nowadays both trackbacks and
pingbacks are "99% spam" so are very frequently shut off. Allowing pingbacks
should probably be a per-blog setting and included in comment approval emails
if the blogger has activated that.

> Sending trackbacks is a very good way to join a cross-blog conversation and
> get links back to your blog, but it's difficult to figure out how to send a
> trackback. We can make it easier. Some blog servers send trackbacks
> automatically and Roller should be able to do the same. Here's how it could
> work:
> - Blogger creates a blog entry
> - Blogger hits publish button to publish blog entry
> - Roller parses the blog entry looking for links
> - For each link found:
> - Roller parses page that is linked to
> - If page has trackback autodiscovery, then Roller sends trackback to the
> page's trackback URL
> Isses:
> - What about entries that are posted to the future?
> - Do we need a trackbackout table to keep track of sent and pending
> trackbacks?
