Martin Desruisseaux created SIS-170:
---------------------------------------

Summary: Creates a meteorological profile of ISO 19115 metadata
                 Key: SIS-170
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SIS-170
             Project: Spatial Information Systems
          Issue Type: Task
          Components: Metadata
            Reporter: Martin Desruisseaux
            Priority: Minor

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) defines a [WMO profile of ISO 19115
metadata|http://wis.wmo.int/2013/metadata/version_1-3-0/WMO_Core_Metadata_Profile_v1.3_Specification_Part_1_v1.0FINALcorrected.pdf].
The MetOcean working group at OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) maintains a
[GitHub project|https://github.com/OGCMetOceanDWG] with, among other resources,
a test suite for that WMO profile. If there is volunteer for taking a closer
look to this profile, we could take some the following actions:

* If WMO defines new types in addition to ISO 19115 types, then we should
create a {{sis-wmo-profile}} module in the {{profiles}} group. The existing
{{sis-french-profile}} module can be used as an inspiration about how to extend
ISO 19115 with custom types.
* If WMO defines the mapping from some format used in the meteorological
community to ISO 19115, then we should create a {{sis-theformat}} module in the
{{storage}} group. The existing {{sis-netcdf}} module can be used as an
inspiration about how to map metadata from a specific format to ISO 19115.
* If what WMO defines is not any of the above - for example if WMO defines
rules about the content to put in existing metadata elements - then we should
open a discussion on the mailing list about how (and if) we could support
similar features (e.g. a metadata validator which depends on the profile used).

Note that the [Apache Open Climate Workbench|http://climate.apache.org] project
may have more expertise for such task. An other project which may be related is
[OODT|http://oodt.apache.org]. Any work on this SIS task should probably be
done in collaboration with those projects.
