Martin Desruisseaux commented on SIS-509:
-----------------------------------------
Thanks for the replacement of source markdown files. I browsed a few pages and
everything seem fine. Well done! I can send an email on the dev@... list if
there is no other short-term tasks planed.
About the two remaining topics, I can create JIRA tasks. But before to do so I
have two questions:
*About pages generated in HTML:* The page contents are generated from
information provided by service providers in Java. So the generators are in
Java and can not be converted easily to a scripting language. We could modify
the Java code for generating Markdown of YAML instead of HTML, but then the
question would be for what purpose? On the advantage side I can see a look more
consistent with the rest of the site, but I'm not sure there is other
advantage. On the inconvenient side I suspect that we would have to put a lot
of HTML in the Markdown page anyway (because of `<summary>`, `<details>`,
_etc._). If we have to do 90% HTML + 10% Markdown, wouldn't it be simpler to do
all in HTML for avoiding the complexity of mixing two languages?
*About developer guide:* I had a look to pandoc (thanks for the info). It seems
a great tools for converting between various formats, including from HTML to
PDF. It does not seem to be a new format on its own (which is good since there
is already so many formats). For writing documentation with some semantic, I'm
aware only of Docbook. But Docbook was created before HTML 5, which introduced
semantic elements. The interest of Docbook compared to HTML seems lower today,
compared to the cost of learning a new language. Maybe an alternative I would
like to explore is [the Ebook
compiler|https://www.xmlmind.com/tutorials/HTML5Books/HTML5Books.html].
