Ok, when I my working config _by itself_ without the dbcp it works... it was 
some combination of using the datasource instead of driver that forced all the 
connections to have the jmx disapear.

I guess this is a non-issue? Lesson is use the Driver class, not the DataSource 
class, and if you have to mix the two, you'll need for force dbcp.
