Hi Richard,
I found the difference that triggers this behaviour. Wenn slf4j-api is 
contained in the war file, the logging works as expected. No classloading 
configuration change is required for that.
Wenn slf4j-api is not contained in the war file, it is logging only in the 
catalina.out.
I suspect, you would not need an example project for that.
