I experimented with this approach to support inplace update in torchvision faster rcnn / mask rcnn: https://github.com/pytorch/vision/blob/6315358dd06e3a2bcbe9c1e8cdaa10898ac2b308/torchvision/ops/poolers.py#L269 This pass will not hit during tracing mode, so it is not an issue for us. But I tried anyway to experiment if `aten::copy_` to `aten::index_put` conversion would work, and indeed for faster rcnn / maskrcnn it cleanly replaced `aten::copy_`.
