please note that these two patches are in working draft, and I have uploaded
them just to share my work. There is still cleanup, fixing and documenting to
be done. There is also some unused code and commented out code left in the
patch for purpose of demonstrating alternative implementations that I didn't
end up using.
This is also intended to fuel conversation about the chosen implementation.
