I think you want #getRawInput() instead of #getConvertedInput().
#convertInput() is called only if the form processing is actually done.
See org.apache.wicket.markup.html.form.FormComponent.validate() and its caller
org.apache.wicket.markup.html.form.Form.validateComponents()
