Haha... ALSO: the files are in UTF-8 encoding, which simply does not work...
(Both the original and the "fixed" one are UTF-8).
I completely forgot that .properties files can't be UTF-8 and spent several
hours trying to figure out why it didn't display correctly with UTF-8...
