*FileSystem and *Fs APIs

I noticed that in HDFS there are two sets of API classes - *FileSystem
and *FS, e.g. FtpFileSystem vs. FtpFs, ChecksumFileSystem vs.
ChecksumFS. I wonder what is the difference. One is replacement of the
other?
