Hi Tim,

Could you try using the branch-1 from the svn-repo/git-clone instead
of a release tarball which may not work in the case of 1.0?

Its a WIP but I also cover some branch building at
http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/QwertyManiac/BuildingHadoopTrunk --
Perhaps it could come useful to you.
