Steve Loughran commented on HADOOP-12910:
-----------------------------------------

We cannot use anything from Guava in a public API. It will make it impossible
to move off guava, ever.

For something experimental to branch-2, maybe. But for a a public API: never.

I'm with Jitendra's option #1. Something disposable for branch-2 as an
experiment: does it work? Meanwhile trunk can use whatever else works well with
lambda-code.

For that to come off, the trunk API needs active engagement from those
downstream projects to help evolve something which suits them. I'm glad,
therefore, that so many are helping out here

> Add a new API, namely FutureFileSystem (or AsynchronousFileSystem, if it is a
> better name). All the APIs in FutureFileSystem are the same as FileSystem
> except that the return type is wrapped by Future, e.g.
> {code}
>   //FileSystem
>   public boolean rename(Path src, Path dst) throws IOException;
>   //FutureFileSystem
>   public Future<Boolean> rename(Path src, Path dst) throws IOException;
> {code}
> Note that FutureFileSystem does not extend FileSystem.
