As Tristan pointed out, looks like the "unused" imports are actually needed,
since they are referred to in the javadocs.
Committed this to trunk and branch-2 after fixing the remaining checkstyle (to
add the '.' at the end of the sentence). Thanks again for working on this
[~tmgstev] and for the reviews [~steve_l] and [~xyao].
