I don't want to go near regexps as the wildcard stuff was clearly at fault 
here. Going for explicit classnames appears to have fixed that.

looking at the trace, the codepath arises if the root dir is not considered 
empty at the time the delete("/", false) is called; looks like another eventual 
consistency problem
