Steve Loughran updated HADOOP-14851:
------------------------------------
    Target Version/s: 2.9.0, 3.0.0-beta1  (was: 3.0.0-beta1)

cherry picked the changes to {{LambdaTestUtils}} into branch-2, retested hadoop
common and the hadoop-aws code, that being where we use it the most.
I didn't include the test changes as they are all lambda-expressions; I could
have redefined them all as callables, but that'd have made for a bigger change
between the branches. I'm relying on the logic in trunk to do the tests

> LambdaTestUtils.eventually() doesn't spin on Assertion failures

> This is funny. The {{LsmbdaTestUtils.eventually()}} method, meant to spin
> until a closure stops raising exceptions, doesn't catch {{Error}} and
> subclasses, so doesn't fail on an {{Assert.assert()}} failure, which raises
> an {{AssertionError}}. My bad :)
> Example:
> {code}
>     eventually(TIMEOUT,
>         () -> {
>           while (counter.incrementAndGet()  < 5) {
>             assert false : "oops";
>           }
>         },
>         retryLogic);
> {code}
> Fix: catch Throwable, rethrow. Needs to add VirtualMachineError & subclasses
> to the set of errors not to spin on (OOM, stack overflow, ...)
