w.r.t whitespace, this is the alias I used to commit patches

alias.apx=apply -3 --verbose --whitespace=fix
{code}
so far it's been OK, handles change well and the verbosity helps me see if I've
gone really wrong. Not so good about catching those little due diligence errors
like committing an early patch or similar —all too easy.
