Just to be clear, I am not generally -1 on Avro upgrades. #4580 would have bumped the Avro major version in a maintenance release of Hadoop; a major Avro version bump is way too big of a change to go into a maintenance release. I would not take the same stack for an upgrade in trunk, which would go into a minor release. Though notably Avro 1.11.0 has at least one major performance issue, which we have found to be severe enough internally at LinkedIn to specifically disallow use of this version: [AVRO-3243](https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AVRO-3243).
