I'm going to propose keeping the refactoring in trunk for now -at least for a
bit of stabilisation as its easier to cope with regressions/followups in a
single branch.
however, at some point it will be good to backport. with a key point being
"it's no longer possible to do work across the two versions of the code". Lets
get everything stable ready for that
