(just had to rebase as it wouldn't merge with the directory marker changes. going to make backporting to branch-3.4 harder. FWIW I'm wondering if we should make the leap to a 3.5.0 release with java17 the baseline and keep 3.4.x the maintenance branch with CVE and jar updates *only*.
