I think the answer here is that a read to a negative offset is considered an error by the caller: https://github.com/apache/hadoop/blob/trunk/hadoop-common-project/hadoop-common/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/fs/shell/Display.java#L430-L438 I wasn't sure if you were considering documentation updates for this.
