Thanks Daryn for pitching in! Yes, the initial scope was to clean up the
protocol to make it more consistent and easier for nonblocking clients. While
reviewing Junping's patch, I thought it'd be a good opportunity to clean up the
SASL exchange as well, since we're bumping RPC version, which will become even
harder to justify in the future.
