Now that the s3a FS is checked in to trunk under tools/hadoop-aws, using the 
AWS SDK, it should be the place where this feature can go. It's got the right 
dependencies, and we don't have to worry about low-level compatibility, just at 
the FS API level.

Could you have a look at the new code and see about getting it working in 
there. Having something env var driven would be good, as it is too easy for AWS 
credentials to leak out today
