This will be a huge maintenance burden on people updating documentation if we
don't backport it to 2.x. We will essentially have to do each documentation
patch twice over. This certainly far outweighs any possible advantage of
converting the docs from apt to markdown (which was already controversial in
the first place). Let's prepare a patch for 2.x ASAP to make sure this work
doesn't go to waste.
