I can either "#ifdef Linux" ... "#ifdef Solaris" the check or I could try to
write some sort of probe program in C. Normally I'd suggest the latter as
testing for features rather than for platforms is usually better, but from the
external discussions around this, it seems that there might be kernel race
conditions that would be difficult to check for. I'm therefore leaning to just
making the code that's selected depend on the platform, but I'm happy to do it
either way.
