Troubled in Understanding getBlockIndex method

Hi again,

     Can someone explain briefly where does the InputFileFomat  
method-"getBlockIndex"  get index from?and how will it be used?

Method:
getBlockIndex(BlockLocation[] blkLocations, long offset) 
          Deprecated.
