Unfortunately, the code you suggest will not work.  The two-arg version of
ConvertUtils.convert() takes a String and a Class, whereas the first argument
inside SetNextRule is actually an Object.  And, arbitrarily converting this to a
String will cause failures in many existing use cases for Digester that really
do need the objects pushed on the stack not to be modified.
